Why does the merchant name or amount look wrong?

Why a merchant name, location, or amount might look unfamiliar.

Written by Rajani

Sometimes a charge in your transaction history looks unfamiliar at first glance. Before assuming fraud, check these common explanations:

The merchant name looks different

  • Legal names vs. brand names: merchants often bill under their parent company or legal entity name, not the brand you bought from.

  • Payment processors: some smaller merchants bill through their payment provider, so the processor's name appears instead.

  • Location looks wrong: the location shown is usually the merchant's registered business address, not where you made the purchase.

The amount looks different

  • Currency conversion: for non-USD purchases, the final settled amount can differ slightly from the estimate at the time of purchase, since the exchange rate is applied at settlement.

  • Pre-authorization holds: hotels, fuel stations, and rentals may hold more than the final amount, then adjust when the charge settles.

  • Tips and adjustments: restaurants may settle a different amount after adding the tip.

Still don't recognise the transaction after checking these? Freeze your card from the app right away and see how to dispute a charge.
